The Mosgiel Taekwon-Do (ITF) is led by Mr. Dion Bennet, 2nd dan. We train on Monday and Wednesday from 6pm - 7:30pm. Membership is open to anyone over the age of six. Your membership allows you to train with any other ITF club world-wide. You are welcome to come and observe at any time and one of the club members will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
Our main class is for members who are not part of the mini-kids programme (see below). Each session begins at 6pm sharp. It is expected that you are at the Dojang before that time, have changed into your Dobok and have greeted your seniors appropraitely. You should also allow adequate time to go through your warmup routine (stretches etc). This allows us to make the most of our time in the class. Other students will be able to assist you with your stretching routine if you need help.
At 6pm the instructor will issue the command to “form up” at which point you are expected to quickly locate your correct position in the dojang and await further instruction.
At the end of the class (usually between 7:30pm and 7:45pm) you will form up again and any important information (usually about upcoming events) will be given. The class will then be dismissed. Some students may remain afterward to practice their patterns, step sparring or board breaking. We must clear the gym by 8:00pm.
From time to time we have official gradings where your knowledge and abilities are assessed. These gradings are usually conducted in conjunction with other local club members, either at our own dojang or elsewhere.
We run a special class for our “mini-kids” - this class is aimed at kids from the age of 6 years upward and is a fun way to get into Takewon-do. The class is a mixture of theory, practice and games.
The mini-kids programme is held on Wednesday nights only from 6pm - 7pm. The kids will “form up” with the entire class at the start of the session, and then after the class has started they will break off for their own programme.
During this time it is expected that a parent or caregiver be present (there is seating available inside the gym). From time to time we might even ask you to help out a little with the class.
Mini-kids will be issued with their own workbook which shows exactly what is required to progress through the syllabus. This book is referenced during the class so it must be brought each night. As each mini-kid completes the sections they will be tested and be given stripes for their white belt to indicate their progress.
The belt progress is indicated as follows:
- White belt - beginner, no prior knowledge.
- Green stripe
- Green and Blue stripe
- Green and Blue and Red stripe
- Green and Blue and Red and Black stripe
- Yellow stripe*
- Double Yellow stripe
- Triple Yellow stripe
As the kids become confident and able to do so they will grade to the Yellow stripes and join the main class where they can continue their training.
* All stripes except Yellow stripe can be given by a club instructor. The yellow stripe is the first of the national grading stripes that must be given by a nationally qualified instructor.
Note: If at any time you have any concerns, questions or comments for the instructors about your child please let them know.
